Winding is an important process in the spinning of yarns. The procedure is conducted through a winding machine. Winding refers to unwrapping the yarn from the one storage packaging and wrapping it on the other. For example, in the leading textile industry, most of the yarn is unwrapped from the bobbin and wrapped around the cone. It is estimated that a bobbin contains around 9-10 km of yarn while on the other hand, a cone can contain 30 times more yarn. Let us dive deep into the concept.
The textile winding machine is operated through three basic processes. These are:
Creeling : In Layman’s terms, creeling refers to placing the package which is needed to be unwrapped. It is the first step in the winding process and should be carried out with great accuracy. If the package is not kept in the mould properly, it can lead to undesired outputs like entangled yarn. It is important to note that creeling time is inversely proportional to the efficiency of the winding machine.
Piecing : Next in the procedure in piecing. Once the creeling is done, the machinery unwraps the yarn and intertwines two ends to make it one. This is done to increase the strength of the yarn.
Doffing : Last is the process of doffing. Doffing is removing the wrapped storage package from the mould. Less the doffing time, more is the efficiency of the machinery, i.e. the relationship is also inversely proportional here.
This was all about the procedure which is conducted in the overall winding process.
The winding machine is classified on several factors like the type of yarn, package and drive. By drive, the winding machines are classified as Direct Drive and Indirect Drive Winding Machine.
But the most famous types of winding machines that are widely adapted into the action are - Precision Winding Machine and Non-Precision Winding Machine classified based on the winding process.
Precision Winding : In precision winding, the yarns are arranged parallel to each other at a winding angle of 90°. The density of yarn packed through the process of precision winding is comparatively high and the packaging is also compact. Further, there are no air gaps in the packaging. But the downside is that the unwinding rate is low, and the packaging is hard, which makes the yarn difficult to dye.
Non-Precision Winding : Non-precision winding uses more than one coil and the yarn is laid in a cross-section design with the angle of winding less than 80°. The yarn is comparatively easy to dye and the packaging is also soft. Even the unwinding rate in this process is also high.
The winding process is quite complex, and it is more than just wrapping and unwrapping. Several faults may occur during this process like breaking of yarn, faulty patches, entangled yarn, etc due to various factors like suction pressure, slub catcher setting, winding speed, etc. To eliminate such faults, you must invest in the quality spare parts of the textile winding machine. When the process is conducted at several scales, one cannot afford dysfunctioning of a massive machine so checking for quality parts of the machine and its condition is utmost important.
